US policy has always been the same

Kamala Sarup

US Freedom and democracy means that the general population has control of the legislators. I think, post-World war two US policy has always been the same as pre-World war two US policy.

Freedom is not a short term gain; it is long term.  It is about "the fundamental values of democracy".  That sentimental concept is the kind of  powerful statement that the US govt puts out to its citizens.  The US gov't., since 1776, has used such appeals to "democracy", "American way of life",
"life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness", "four score and seven year ago  etc., in the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address" and other appeal.

The core of the war on terrorism is  to protect the US against attacks by terrorists who consider the US their enemy. Radical terrorists have caused American deaths for a very long time. There have been many isolated violent acts against Americans since then.  However, the wars being waged in Afghanistan and Iraq are the immediate objectives of this war against terrorism.  Whether the U.S. government succeeds in these wars is an open question.

The limited success in the war against terrorism is inadequate to
stop terrorism abroad, but additional adopted domestic security measures may reduce terrorist successes within the US.

Armed Forced Day

May 21 is Armed Forced Day which was established on August 31, 1949. Through U.S. history, American people have shown great respect and honor to their armies. They remember and pay tribute to those soldiers killed in war. The Army is definitely the Nation's power and pride, and they protect the civilians. They risk their lives fighting against violence and protect the nation. Every country has to honor their soldiers who are at war, who in the line of duty are fighting.

Armies can defend the country, but are ineffective against isolated violent or terrorist attacks. Outside the country, an army can assist to defeat violence but cannot accomplish that alone because violent or arms group are not found in armies. The only way to defeat violence is to assist intelligence to find arms group and bring them to justice.

The deaths and the property losses after attack cannot be restored completely no matter how much money other countries send.

Even, there have been many isolated violent acts against civilians through out the world. Arms group or terrorists group kill children, adults and women.

Denial stops here.

A warning ( still friendly) this time

Kamala, with all respect, please, read the Howard Zinn's " The People's History of the US' and then ... peruse our site. After that you are welcome to speculate on  the US foreign policy and its purposes. l But not before:)  I do not want to sound patronizing,  condescending, etc. On the contrary- I am encouraging the author to find  her calling. It is obvious from the previous two articles that history and policy of the US are not her cup  of tea, sorry.  Please, I want to hear more of the Nepalese native's view  on the US cultural life. Please, we all need that info. That would be very valuable indeed.

"our" site?

Mark, I know you are a reader of Kamala's articles.  While this one may not be the most in-depth, her previous pieces speak for themselves and are insightful as to the interpretation and experiences of someone from abroad now living in the U.S.  Whether or not we agree is not the point.  Kamala has been publishing pieces for Op Ed News for many months now.  She is more than familiar with the site.  I have been assisting her with some copy editing to make her pieces a bit more readable for this audience, and per Rob's request.  Rob has a lot of respect for Kamala and her articles, as well as her activism in human rights worldwide -- as do I.  As a writer and one of the editor's for Op Ed News, I think Kamala's opinions are important - while not always right on the mark, or differing from how Americans might view our politics and policies, nonetheless, they offer insight into how she views the American system compared to that of not only Nepal, but other countries struggling for certain rights and freedoms.

Best, Jan Baumgartner

I agree

and that is why it was a  friendly warning. I know that  the articles on Nepal by Kamala are great. Ok,  let's  say the site is 'ours', meaning it works for all of us. But it is vital  to show that an otherwise talented and  useful ( sorry for a word) source  suddenly engages herself in the unfortunate set of banalities. The article above is not even an opinion piece- it is a compendium of banal statements.

Otherwise I am cool.  I want more articles on Nepal and even more on her view on the US (cultural, please).

Kamala Sarup

I appreciate your comment very much.

Dear  Mark and Dear  Jan,

I believe most strongly in democracy, but I think
democracy and patriotism should go together. I love America because it
has given me complete freedom, and so it is my duty to defend
America's democracy worldwide. You don't know how anti American
sentiment is going around in some radical places. It is every one's duty to protect America's values.  even
though I am not a citizen of this country I live here, I work here,
and so as a good responsible woman I am going to write for America
because I love America.
I appreciate your comment very much
.thank you.
