Did Obama Beat Clinton Fundraising?

by Rob Kall     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

Obama raised over $25 million. He raised his money from more people than Hillary. But the real question is, did he raise more money that could be spent on the primary than Hillary.

Hillary reported raising $26 million altogether, this past quarter, but has not reported, yet, how much of that was money that could only be used for the general election. Reports indicate that her fundraising efforts sought to get the double $2300 maximum-- $2300 for the primary and $2300 for the general election.
Reports suggest that Obama's fundraising was focused on the primary. it is possible that by this measure, Obama may have beaten Hillary.

We won't know until Hillary reports her numbers. Want to guess why there's such a delay?

Hillary

I've heard that the word is that Hillary doesn't have nearly that much to spend on the primaries. Hold on to your hats kids. It's gonna be a fun ride.

SAD

i think it's a sad statement of what  "democracy" has become. instead of talking about who stands for what, and who is the better candidate, all anybody cares about is how much MONEY they have. we all know where the money comes from, so it's the same 'ol sh*t all over again!

Who Cares?

The question is not how much but from whom.  The identities of the donors is the best evidence of the position of the candidate on the issues that concern the electorate. In some instances a campaign contribution is nothing more than a bribe.  In most instances the same special interest will contribute in varying amount to each of the candidates.

I want to bring the troops home, not just from Iraq but from the some 700 + military installations we have in foreign countries. I don't want to support a candidate who is receiving the bulk of his or her campaign contributions from the military-industrial complex, neocons, or other special interests that are transforming our constitutional republic into a militant empire.

Money is the only thing

So this is the 'democracy' US wants to export. The presidential race has degenerated into a business to bring in the maximum revenue. The candidate with the highest income and can spin the biggest brainwashing marketing campaign automatically wins the race. Oh yes, I almost forgot the votes. That's just the rubber stamp, just like a banana republic 'electing' its dictator.

Sad, indeed

It is not only sad, it is proof there will never be anything other than the dysfunctional two party system under which our nation stagnates. Our nation has strayed so far away from the principles upon which it was founded. There is no true representation for the people, by the people. Only the wealthy have the opportunity to seek the highest offices in the land. Then, the ones who get elected are so beholden to those who hold the purse strings, they have little concern or time for "the people." Elections are no longer about issues. They are about who has the big bucks for tv ads and smear campaigns. The winners of the party primaries are often not the best, but instead are the most monied. Issues are merely a sideshow, rarely the focus.  Sad, indeed.

the money

There is a solution.  Public financing.  You can then and only then elect the public officials that really want to do something for democracy.  someone who will represent the people instead of the special interests.  Come on people, wake up!  Get behind the real solutions.  Pass it on!

Just ask Rudy!

Money is the winner, Money is the winner. Not on my watch, sorry Rob, sorry folks. That is the trouble. People who got the money to give should be doing the bragging right? Not the receipient!  And why does it cost so much for a campaign? It seems to get more and more and more expensive all the time. Is that what democracy is all about$ I really think it should be a test of wills and character, and good marks that determine the President. Not the bankrolls. No matter how much anyone gets, it will never equal the amount stolen from the WTC on 911. Just ask Rudy!

Taking the Money out of the Election Equation

The ideal solution is to take the money out of the equation-- by requiring TV networks and stations to provide free advertising time to qualified candidates.

But any candidate who advocates for this will be brutally attacked by the media he or she proposes to take income from.

The money raised in this latest news cycle is not corporate. It is from individuals, with a maximum of $2300 for the primaries and $2300 for the general election.

The fact that Obama raised it from 100,000 plus people suggests that the average contribution was $250. Obama raised 50% more money on line than Hillary, which is also a sign of grass roots fundraising. I don't think corporations give on-line. Corporations give through PACs.

These numbers are one measure that is data-based, not poll based. They show actual numbers of people who put their money where their mouths are.

I haven't decided who to back yet, though Hillary is not at the top of my list.

BTW, probably the best coverage of polls and such for the primary is at mydd.com. Chris Bowers is a real whiz at this stuff.

It's useful to recall that early on in the 2004 race, Howard Dean was far ahead of other candidates in fundraising.  Bottom line, money is raised to buy TV time. But the networks are free to portray candidates any way they want. If they choose to capture, for any of this year's crop of candidates, a Howard-Dean-Yee-Haw moment, they can intentionally destroy that candidate, just like they destroyed Dean.

Did Obama Beat Clinton Fundraising

Uncategorically, yes.

Obama beat Clinton in fund-raising.

What does Obama's popularity tell us about the mood of the electorate?

They are eager for coherent,  effective policies.  Obama is not tied to the failed past.  He never supported the brutal, futile and optional war in Iraq.  He never voted for it before he voted against it. He has not repudiated his past policies and actions in a spineless attempt to pander to his base.

They are eager for a candidate who leads from the bottom-up.  Obama is an accomplished scholar and teacher, a community organizer and a legislator who has shown the ability to create bi-partisan coalitions to achieve results.

They are looking for a link to the great progressive values.  At forty-five Obama provides a link between youth and the historic values of progressivism.

Obama's people believe in him.

They believe in him because he is energetic, effective, shrewd and shows a mastery of strategic thinking.

People with money recognize these qualities, that is why Obama is garnering the support he is getting.

Let's not transform politics into American Idol by taking the risk out of it.

When people put their money where their mouths are, they will support the candidate of their choice.  To be effective candidates must be able to attract such support.  To succeed they will need the loyalty that such support brings.

Obama has garnered most of his money from small donors, not from fat cats.  He has shown that the hand-wringing about money is misplaced.

Let people put their money where they want, don't let the government convert elections into American Idol with publicly funded campaigns.

The Media Beats Everyone in Fundraising.

You know Robert what gets me is the Media always has their hand out in collecting the money. Who the heck are they? When do they contribute to American elections? I think their contribution would be to provide free air time for candidates. All media would be encouraged to do so, and if they don't we know they are not supporters of the American way; but are users for their profiteering. See how long they maintain viewership. It is the election process that establishes their future, and if there was no election process where would they be? I don't think government should be responsible for deciding how much is given to candiates but the Media should oblige their contributions to the American System by allowing Candiate coverage. In fact it is their show isn't it? They dictate who what when where and why....so how about the Media in doing its lions share. Don't tell me they don't have the money!
